Dmitrij Bortnjanskij

Today's offering is a lively affair but not as impressive as the consonants that stream from his name! Dmitrij Bortnjanskij was of Ukrainian Cossack origins. He was born in Glukhov in modern Ukraine.
Bortnjanskij composed for the imperial Russian court, mostly operas but he also loved liturgical music too. And if you are familiar with the deep tones of Eastern Orthodox liturgical music, this is a rich seam to explore.
This piece though is something of an exception within his oeuvre, and a vibrant exception it is too….



The fast movements overdid the brio for this Old Boy. But the andantino was beautiful …
